About Zethar Al-Umma Foundation
Zethar Al-Umma Foundation, is a not- for- profit and non-governmental organization duly registered in Nigeria. Our headquarters is in Sokoto, North-West Nigeria, from where we reach into Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger and Ebonyi States of Nigeria as well as to Niger Republic and lately, other parts of Francophone West Africa.

We practice the Transformational Community Development (TCD) model which helps communities evolve from abject poverty to sustainable development. In Transformational Community Development, our modus operandi is two-fold. One, we facilitate knowledge transfer to the rural poor and two, we engage them to look inwards, discover resources that are inherent in them and resident in their communities, and teach them how to fully utilize and maximize those resources in order to upgrade the quality of life and living. Our activities in helping the poor and the hurting go beyond mere alleviation and relief to sustainable development.

We focus on five main areas that are essential to human existence:
Water
Food
Education
Wellness

Income Generation Water: we embark on water projects to solve the problems of lack of clean water for drinking, cooking and cleaning encountered by many rural communities. We drill boreholes, dig water wells and teach water purification techniques in communities. In 2016 alone, we drilled a borehole each in Tadurga, Zuru L.G., Kebbi State and in Dogongada, Sakaba L.G., Kebbi State, Ezza, Ebonyi State These boreholes laid to rest the perennial problem of lack of water that the locals have experienced over the years. The drilling of the borehole in Bakoba village, Maradi State, Niger Republic will commence soon.

Wellness: our activities in this regard include provision of free medical services and medication in villages that lack health facilities, community health sensitization talks/seminars to enlighten rural dwellers about the importance of preventive health which is enhanced by environmental and body hygiene for prevention of mosquitoes and other disease causing organisms, use of mosquito nets. We also teach and help villagers construct VIP latrines to curb the menace of open defecation and its attendant consequences. We have constructed VIP latrines in some villages of Nigeria such as Tadurga, Kwangirawa, Dogongada  and in Kagama, Niger Republic, as well as in Kouba, in Burkina Faso.

Food: To this end we teach villagers about good nutrition and what constitutes a balanced diet illustrating it with the foods available in their local context. We teach mothers how to prepare food for malnourished children using grains and nuts found in their locality. While teaching, we clearly demonstrate the relationship between nutrition and the health of an individual and communities as a whole. We encourage women to set up small vegetable gardens in their backyards to help them eat healthy and cut costs. We also teach farmers on best practices and farming techniques that will guarantee maximum yields. We also provide irrigation kits for dry season farming. We encourage farmers to use organic manure/compost on their farms (and teach them how to compose it) so as to reduce reliance on inorganic fertilizers that are hazardous to human health.

Education: The TCD model believes that every boy and girl child is entitled to at least, a primary level education irrespective of their circumstance and location. In furtherance of the foregoing and in pursuance of our vision, we have established 4 primary schools in remote areas where none previously exists to cater for school age children within those localities. The schools, known as Al-Umma Primary Schools are situated in Dogongada, Sakaba L.G., Kebbi State, Nigeria, Tadurga in Zuru L.G., Kebbi State, Nigeria, Algamusu and Kwangirawa, Bangi L.G. Niger State, Nigeria respectively.

In addition, we have literacy centers spread across villages of north-west Nigeria to provide illiterate adults with opportunity of learning how to read and write.

We also established Al-Umma Comprehensive College situated within the Old-Airport Area of Sokoto metropolis as our own intervention of providing highly subsidized but qualitative education for children of indigent and low-income earners. The school focuses on solution-oriented education rather than on exam and paper-oriented education. Our training looks at how students will go beyond merely passing examinations and laminating paper certificates, to how the knowledge acquired in the 6 years of secondary education will be a catalyst for developing the leaders in them and translate into practical solutions for the multifarious challenges faced by the nation Nigeria.

In addition, we have literacy centers spread across villages of north-west Nigeria to provide illiterate adults with opportunity of learning how to read and write.

Income Generation: In order to help solve the poverty issues prevalent in most rural communities, we set up skills acquisition centers in some villages to help women and young people acquire skills with which they can generate some income for themselves and their families. Foremost of the skills we teach is tailoring and knitting in our tailoring centers, and geared particularly towards improving the lot of the women who do not do anything else other than being farm hands on their husband's farms during the rainy season. During the dry season of November to June in North-West Nigeria, the women stay idle at home and fully dependant on their husbands for sustenance. The centers afford rural women the opportunity of learning how to sew for themselves, their children and also sew for others to generate some income. We also teach beads and wirework making and soap making. We set up entrepreneurship classes for young people in larger towns where we find that most of them are unemployed. Several skills like printing, painting, artwork, soap making, cream making, bead work, bag and shoe making, inverter and solar energy systems among others are taught. We have a total of 4 Centers, one each in Gusau, Tadurga, Dogongada and Algamusu.

We also provide what we call the 'goat loan' to indigent women and widows to help them rear goats for sale. The loan is repayable within 3 years, not by cash, but by young goats which revolves to others in need.

We initiate community projects that is capable of generating resources and employment. One of such is the garri processing machines we set up in Ezza, Ebonyi State.
